Attracted by another level
Every three to four years, contemporary art platform WARP immerses the city of Sint-Niklaas in highly topical art by organising the ‘Coup de Ville’ arts exhibition.
Coup de Ville literally refers to committing a coup (in the city), but is obviously taken poetically. Coup de Ville is an artistic trail at various locations in the city featuring more than 30 artists coming from Belgium and all over the world.
Art was explored by the public in residential houses, museums, empty properties, private gardens or in the public space of Sint-Niklaas. In the architectural setting, the flaneur came into contact with rococo, neo-styles, art deco, modernism, brutalism, grandeur, decay, coterie, renovation and transformation. The city and the community that carries it became a platform where predominantly young, emerging artists from much of the world got to work. There are few 'big names' - a deliberate choice, whereas as an organisation we rather build on the passionate encounters with artists through our portfolio days or the Artists' Villages. Encounters which lead to long-term amicable relationships from a professional commitment.
The various themes the artists developed in their, mostly new, productions were inspired by the exhibition title, the specific environment, the nature of their own oeuvre or the artistic medium. In total, there were about 30 projects.
