We hebben het dan niet over de alle catastrofes - van de pandemie over klimaat of de bedreigde democratie, die ons vandaag teisteren. Wel over het fenomeen catastrofe zoals filosoof Gilles Deleuze er over dacht. Hij zag het als een positief en constructief begrip en het wijst op een moment van vruchtbare chaos tijdens het ontstaansproces van een kunstwerk. Het is het ogenblik waarop bestaande clichés achterwege gelaten worden om tot iets nieuws te komen.
Sommige kunstenaars zijn meer dan andere geïnteresseerd in die chaos en complexiteit en wensen dat ook zichtbaar te laten in hun uiteindelijke resultaat. Ben je zo iemand, dan ben je meer dan welkom op ons socratisch gesprek. Hierin denken we samen na over dit thema. Het is geen debat, waar alles draait om het bewijzen van je eigen gelijk. Veranderen van gedacht is in zo’n gesprek zelfs heel normaal. Want in dialoog graaf je vaak dieper dan in je eentje.
Dit gesprek over ‘catastrofe in de kunst’ wordt begeleid door Aäron Willem in kader van een tentoonstellingsproject. Hij is beeldend kunstenaar, momenteel in residentie bij WARP en opgeleid als filosoof.

We are not talking about all the catastrophes – from the pandemic to climate change or the threats to democracy – that plague us today. Instead, we refer to the concept of catastrophe as philosopher Gilles Deleuze understood it. He saw it as a positive and constructive idea, marking a moment of fertile chaos in the creative process of an artwork. It is the point at which existing clichés are abandoned to make way for something new.
Some artists are more drawn to this chaos and complexity than others and aim to make it visible in their final work. If that resonates with you, you are more than welcome to join our socratic discussion. This is not a debate focused on proving one's point but rather a space for collective reflection. Changing one’s perspective in such a conversation is totally normal, as dialogue often allows for deeper exploration than thinking alone.
This discussion on "catastrophe in art" will be guided by Aäron Willem as part of an exhibition project. He is a visual artist currently in residence at WARP and educated as a philosopher.
